Not every part of the city gets looked at. Sealed doors, empty windows, a sign for a shop that closed years ago, a painting on a wall nobody walks past anymore. Where attention has withdrawn, the night stays, even at noon. This is the Eternal Night.
It is not a place so much as a condition, and it is the one thing Terminal City works against. Not a villain. Just forgetting. When people stop noticing a room, a wall, a habit a neighbourhood had, the night settles into it, and what was there goes missing, quietly, without anyone deciding it should.
The crows inspect its edges and carry them to Trout Lake. By day the Repair People are sent there; what a brush cannot fix, the fog rebuilds; what cannot be rebuilt, the Freight takes away. The Eternal Night keeps nothing. It only shows the city where it is losing.
