The Sixth Hour

The Sixth Hour

The sixth hour of music, when the walls start to breathe.

The Sixth Hour is not six o'clock. It is the sixth hour of music without a break. Some warehouse rooms in East Van are perfectly ordinary for the first five hours. After that, they get less reliable.

By the sixth hour, distance stretches. The walls breathe by a few millimetres. A door is not quite where it was. Nothing dramatic happens, and nobody could photograph it, but everyone in the room feels the rules of space go soft. Terminal City lets this happen on purpose. Nobody has decided whether it is a malfunction or a pressure release, and nobody in the room is asking.

The Nocturnals find the room. The Wire Choir carries the signal without admitting it. Whatever gets bent tonight goes on the crows' list tomorrow. The sixth hour starts when the music does.
